British pensioners in Cyprus feel the squeeze

"David Cornthwaite, the Chairman of the UKCA in Paphos told the Sunday Mail that the biggest topic of conversation among expats at the moment is the financial crisis.

The government of Cyprus is saying that we’re OK, but this simply isn’t so. They’re living in fantasyland.” He continued, “The full force of the impact has yet to be felt, but it’s begun already.

Two of our members, the Crawfords, are shortly returning to the UK. They’ve done all their sums and worked out that they’re far better off there. They’ve been comparing prices between UK supermarkets and those in Paphos, and they will get substantially more groceries in their weekly shopping trolley in England.

Due to a combination of the poor exchange rate from sterling to the euro and local inflation, they’ve worked out that they’re 42 per cent worse off here.

Brian and Barbara Crawford decided to retire to Cyprus just over two years ago."

Airlines face tough 2009 as freight collapses-IATA

"GENEVA, Jan 29 (Reuters) - International air freight traffic plunged 22.6 percent in December compared to a year earlier, an "unprecedented and shocking" free fall that signals a broader slump in world trade, industry data showed on Thursday.

The International Air Transport Association said airlines faced one of their toughest years ever, with cross-border passenger traffic dropping 4.6 percent year-on-year in December, even after a boost from advance bookings of holiday travel.

The data is also bad news for the broader global economy -- in value terms, a third of world trade is in goods sent by air.

"Keep your seatbelts fastened and prepare for a bumpy ride and a hard landing," warned IATA Director-General Giovanni Bisignani.

"The 22.6 percent drop in international cargo traffic in December puts us in uncharted territory and the bottom is nowhere in sight," Bisignani, previously chief executive of Air Italia, added.

All regions showed major declines in international freight traffic, according to IATA. Asia-Pacific carriers, who make up 45 percent of the air cargo market, were hit hardest.

"The collapse in the airline industry's freight business is a reflection of 20-30 percent declines in export and import volumes being reported across Asia, North America and Europe as the global recession plumbs new depths in December," it said."

Lufthansa to trial lighter cargo containers

"Lufthansa Cargo and Jettainer have begun testing lighter air cargo containers, in a drive to reduce costs.

The pilot scheme will run until autumn 2009 and will trial 1,000 containers, made by four seperate manufacturers, on Lufthansa’s global network.

Jettainer’s MD Alexander Plümacher said: “International aviation has used conventional aluminium containers for the transport of cargo and baggage for many decades.

"With the introduction of new lightweight containers made of composite materials, the global airline industry can reckon to deliver annual fuel savings in the upper double-digit million range,” he went on to say."
